ABSTRACT
Research has been done on fabrication and characterization of water vapour barrier
properties of packaging paper coating based on starch and montmorillonite clay. The
purpose of this study was to determine the effect of clay water vapour barrier
properties of starch. The concentration of clay were 5%, 10%, 15%, 23%, 30%, 40%
and 50% w/w. The starch / clay composite were prepared by solvent casting method
and then coated on paper as the substrate, and finally the barrier properties were
measured. The results showed that the addition of clay improved the water vapour
barrier properties of starch. The WVTR values of paper substrat was 928.00 g/m2day,
and was decreased to 722.67 g/m2day when starch was coated. The WVTR values of
paper coated with clay/starch composite decreased 709.33 g/m2day when 5% w/w
clay was added the decreased to 400 g/m2day when 50% w/w was added. The most
significant improvement of water barrier properties was observed when caly loading
was from 5% w/w to 23% w/w.

ABSTRAK
Telah dilakukan penelitian mengenai fabrikasi dan karakterisasi lapisan kertas
kemasan berbahan kanji singkong dan tanah lempung Na-Bentonite berjenis
montmorillonite. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan
tanah lempung pada sifat perintang lapisan kanji singkong terhadap uap air.
Konsentrasi tanah lempung yang diberikan 5%, 10%, 15%, 23%, 30%, 40% dan 50%
b/b. Komposit kanji/tanah lempung dibuat dengan metode solvent casting lalu
dicoating pada permukaan kertas sebagai substratnya, dan sifat perintangnya diukur.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan penambahan tanah lempung dapat meningkatkan sifat
perintang kanji terhadap uap air. Nilai WVTR kertas saja sebesar 928.00 g/m2hari,
dan menurun menjadi 722.67 g/m2hari ketika kanji dicoating pada kertas. Nilai
WVTR lapisan komposit menurun menjadi 709.33 g/m2hari ketika diberikan 5% b/b
tanah lempung, lalu menurun menjadi 400.00 g/m2hari ketika diberikan 50% b/b
tanah lempung. Peningkatan sifat perintang uap air teramati ketika tanah lempung
diberikan dari 5% b/b hingga 23% b/b.
