An Analysis Of Translation Techniques And Translation Quality Of Cultural Terms In Novel Entitled Eragon

The objectives of this research are: (1) to find out the cultural terms in novel entitled Eragon; (2) to examine the type of translation technique which is used by the translator to translate the cultural terms of Eragon novel; and (3) to assess the quality of translation of cultural terms in Eragon novel.  
This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The source of data for this research is the novel Eragon, and its Indonesian version. The data are the cultural terms found in the novel Eragon. Furthermore, the result of Focus Group Discussion with informants is also used as the data. The FGD was conducted to determine the cultural terms, the translation technique and the translation quality. This research uses purposive sampling technique in the process of choosing document and informants.
The result of this research shows that: The cultural terms which are found in the novel are  categorized into four groups; (1) ecology, (2) material culture, (3) social culture, and (4) organization. In the translation of the cultural terms, the translator uses single translation and couplet translation. There are eight single translation techniques which were used to translate the cultural terms; (1) Generalization, (2) Discursive Creation, (3) Modulation, (4) Established Equivalent, (5) Borrowing (Naturalized and Pure Borrowing), (6) Adaptation, (7) Implicitation, and (8) Deletion. Furthermore, there are four couplet translation techniques used in the translation; (1) Generalization and Explicitation; (2) Borrowing (Pure) and Addition; (3) Explicitation and Established Equivalent; and (4) Explicitation and Borrowing (Pure); the assessment of translation quality shows that the overall translation quality is scored A with a mean score of 2.66. Accuracy is scored B with mean score of 2.38 and categorized as less accurate translation. Acceptability is scored A with mean score of 2.72 and categorized as acceptable translation. And lastly, readability is scored A with mean score of 2.90 and categorized as readable translation. The result above shows that the translation technique which used in translating the cultural terms resulted in less accurate but acceptable and readable translation.
