Abstrak : This research was conducted to figure out the types of warning in the movie “SCREAM”, how warnings are expressed by the characters in the movie, and the responses of the hearers towards the warning. This research used the Socio-Pragmatics approach with speech act as the field of study. It is a descriptive qualitative research and it employes purposive sampling as the sampling technique. Thus, the data in this research were data that had important relationship with the problem being observed. Here, only the speech act warning was analyzed. From the result of the data analysis, there are two types of warning that are used by the characters in the movie “SCREAM.” They are direct and indirect. Direct warning is indicated by finding the direct relationship between a structure and function. Meanwhile, indirect relationship is indicated by finding the indirect relationship between a structure and function. It also is supported by the context in which the act of warning occurs. The speakers use indirect warning because it is considered more polite than direct warning even though warning is usually used in urgent situation. It depends on the context. The result of this research shows that by employing the element of SPEAKING, it is found that most of conversations have informal situation. The setting is almost in the night at home, at school, and at the police station. The participants are the addressors to the addressees of the same status (among friends), subordinate addressors to super ordinate addresses (cameraman to reporter, a girl to police) and super ordinate addressors to subordinate addresses (police to people). The ends of the direct warning are to emphasize warning sentences in order the hearer pays much attention and obeys the warning because the speaker warns the hearer for their own benefit. The ends of indirect warning are to warn someone more polite without giving any pressure. Most of the conversations have the key in bad atmosphere and in strain situation. The instrumentality is spoken language. There is a norm between the reporter and cameraman, brother and sister, police and people and among friends. The other finding from this research is that there are 3 forms of response towards the warning. They are positive response, negative response and temporization. The researcher expects students of English department and other people especially who are interested in socio-pragmatics study to use this research as reference.
