Graduate Program, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta 2005.The image of community o n Correctional Facility generally called jail is still negative. The center is o nly regarded as a place where criminals are imprisoned and in which other negative consequences toward them such physical harassment or cruel acts by the authority persist. They are always presumed to have deviated, low, impaired morale and attitudes so that there is no need to do contacts and even to build relations with them. They are regarded as bad, cruel, and brutal people who must be given no attentions, avoided and even eradicated from the social life. As A result, the jail allegedly becomes a fearsome and frightening place for public or those who undergo sentence, and the sentenced (the nurtured) are regarded as criminals. This public opinion exists due to misinformation. What actually happens in the Correctional Facility?
This research is focused o n the activities communication applied in the Islamic religious/spiritual nurturing activities at Class I of State Correctional Facility of Surakarta. This is a qualitative descriptive basic research aimed at explaining and describing the Islamic religious/spiritual activity which is also a communication activity, namely: Islamic propagating communication. This research studies o n-going model of communication during the Islamic religious/spiritual nurturing activities and effect of communication o n attitudes of those sentenced following their involvement in the activities. Viewed from the context where the communication activities take place, the Correctional Facility environment is different from the outside environment.
The findings of the research are the Islamic religious/spiritual nurturing activities, namely: Koran reading and writing, tartil/qiro’ and tausiah. The aims of the activities are to improve the nurtured’s knowledge o n Islamic teachings, to make the nurtured aware of their bad attitudes, and to shape their attitudes according to the Islamic teachings.
From the point of view of content of communication messages, the Islamic religion nurturing activities are propagating communications of Islamic teachings, which are realized in two models of communication, namely: inter-personnel communication and group communication. In the inter-personnel communication, the messages are verbally conveyed by communicators and communicants directly when communication is proceeding. Meanwhile, in the latter, the messages are given and achieved through two models of group communication, namely: small group of communication and large group of communication. The flow of the messages is seen from the feedbacks, that is, exchanging communication which is either non-verbal o nly, or non-verbal and verbal.
From the point of view of effects of communication, there are three types of effects of communication, namely: cognitive, affective, and behavior. The cognitive effects can be seen from the improvement of knowledge of the nurtured o n the Islamic teachings following the activities. The affective effects can be recognized from the fact that they have awareness, regretflul feeling, repentance, and peacefulness, and the behavior effects can be seen from their changes in behaviors and attitudes following the activities.
