2005.This research is designed to describe the taboo utterances o n men and women speeches in the film Erin Brockovich, the function of the taboo utterances, and the factors which influence the use of the taboo utterances o n men and women speeches in the film.
This research uses the Sociolinguistics approach. It is a descriptive qualitative research and it employs purposive sampling as the sampling technique. The data in this research are taboo utterances o n men and women speech in the film Erin Brockovich.
From the results of the data analysis, there are eleven kinds of taboo utterances and some of their variations found o n men and women speeches in the film Erin Brockovich. The functions of those taboo utterances are to express anger, to intensify, to refer to something bad, to put down/ insult, to disprove o ne’s statement, to attribute negative characteristic, to express displeasure, to express annoyance, to express surprise, to show closeness, and to praise. The same taboo utterances might serve different functions. There are some factors that influence the use of taboo utterances o n men and women speeches in the film, namely personal emotion, level of education, social status/stratification, and relationship between participants.
The results of this research show that women take more portion than men in uttering taboo. It indicates that taboo is not largely men prerogative.
It is recommended that other researchers explore taboo language showing that men and women use different way in expressing taboo since the research will gain the information about taboo and its appropriateness. This research is expected to be able to be used as an additional knowledge and reference for students, other researchers, and readers, especially for those who are interested in Sociolinguistics study.
