This study investigates cultural terms translation in “Jalan Tak Ada Ujung” by Mochtar Lubis and its English version. The objectives of the research are to identify the categories of the cultural terms in the novel, to describe the strategies used by the translator in translating the cultural terms in the novel, and to describe the accuracy of the resulted translation in the novel.
This research belongs to descriptive qualitative o ne. The sources of the data are the novel “Jalan Tak Ada Ujung” by Mochtar Lubis and its English version “A Road with No End” by Anthony H. Johns. The data of this research are Indonesian cultural terms in the form of words and phrases in that novels. The samples are obtained purposively and there are 89 cultural terms in those novels taken as samples.
In conducting the research, the data were analyzed using a semantic approach (componential analysis) proposed by Nida (1975). It was done by comparing the semantic features of cultural terms in SL with TL cultural terms.
The results of the research show that: (1) There are five categories of the cultural terms in the novel, namely; ecology, material culture, social culture, organizations, gesture and habit, (2) Eight strategies are applied by the translator to translate the cultural terms, (3) From the total data (89) data, 55% data are accurate, whereas 45 % data are inaccurate.
From the analysis of the resulted translation, it can be concluded that the strategy which contributes to the accuracy of data is changing the lexicon with its equivalence in target language and the strategy which contributes a inaccuracy of data is cultural substitution.Related to the accuracy of the translation, I suggest that a translator must try to reach the accuracy. If he cannot find the equivalence of source language term in the target language, the best way is he can use the term in target language as a loan word and give explanation of the term.
