× The main objective of this research is to find out whether: (1) Australasian parliamentary debate is more effective than small group discussion to teach speaking; (2) the students having high risk-taking have better speaking skill than those having low risk-taking; and (3) there is an interaction between the teaching techniques and students’ risk-taking in teaching speaking. This research is an experimental study which was carried out at Business Administration Department of Pontianak State Polytechnic. The population of this research was the third semester students of Business Administration Department of Pontianak State Polytechnic in the academic year of 2012/2013. The sample of this research consisted of two classes; the class A was used as the experimental group and class B as the control group. The experiment group was treated by using Australasian parliamentary debate; while the control group was treated by using small group discussion. Each class had 24 students so the total sample was 48 students. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling and the instruments used to collect the data were students’ risk-taking questionnaire and speaking test. In analyzing the data, multifactor analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test were used. The findings of this research are: (1) Australasian parliamentary debate is more effective than small group discussion in teaching speaking; (2) the students having high risk-taking have better speaking skill than those having low risk-taking; and (3) there is an interaction between techniques and students’ risk-taking for teaching speaking. Based on the research findings above, the result convinced teachers that Australasian parliamentary debate is one of the effective techniques to improve students’ speaking skill. Through debating, the students are demanded to have critical thinking ability by giving logical arguments, presenting evidences, and persuading audience. By actively participating in a debate, they can train themselves to be confident when they speak in front of many people.
