Abstrak : This research is conducted to figure out the classes of commissive expressions in the films entitled THE LORD OF THE RINGS I : THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS and THE LORD OF THE RINGS II : THE TWO TOWERS and how each class of commissive expression is employed by the characters in the films. This research uses the Sociolinguistics approach with speech act as the field of study. It is a descriptive qualitative research and it employs purposive sampling as the sampling technique. Thus, the data in this research are all commissive expressions in the films. They are classified based on classes by using the Austin’s Theory of Classification of Commissives and Searle Theory of Threats as the additional theories. Then, each class of commissive applied in the films is analysed by using Ethnography of Communication with SPEAKING formula and Social Dimensions as supporting theories. The results of this research can be seen as follows: 1. There are 3 types of Commissives namely Promises, Offers, and Threats. Promises are class of commissives in which the speaker promises to do an act in the future. Promising performatives include promise, swear, and vow. Offers are class of commissives in which the speaker offers to do an act in the future. Offering performatives include offer, propose, volunteer. While, Threats are class of commissives in which the speaker performs a future act to the detriment of the addressee. 2. Commissives could occur whether in the formal or in the informal situation. It depends on the situation when the conversation occurs and the relationship between participants in the conversation. The occurences of commissive expressions in these films could be motivated by some factors such as loyalty, love, sympathy, friendship, hatred, and distrustful. The researcher expects that this research will give contributions in Sociolinguistics study. It is suggested to other researchers to conduct a study on the use of commissive expressions in other certain English - speaking communities depicted in many other movies, novels, or songs.
