Abstrak : This research focuses on the subject of secularization and its causes that occur in England middle class society as reflected in Middlemarch. With its subtitle, A Study of Provincial Life, it is one of George Eliot’s novels that describes the secularized society in provincial town. The main data consists of the narration, ideas, attitudes, and way of thinking and dialogues among the characters which are taken from George Eliot’s Middlemarch published in 1991 by Everyman Library. To add the information about secularization, it is important to know further description about the definition, history and nature of secularization in England and its causes, and the social condition when the author lives including the description of Victorian England social condition. The purposes of this research are to describe the issue of secularization and its causes that occur in England middle class society as reflected in Middlemarch. By using the socio-historical approach, the researcher tries to find out the answer of the research questions. The chapter of analysis consists of two subchapters, the secularization in Middlemarch and the causes of secularization in Middlemarch. This research concludes that secularization is reflected through the character, setting, plot, and the theme of the novel in which some characters have a secular occupation and different belief system as the background of secularization. The setting also implies the tendency of the characters in seeing secularization. Most of the characters belong to middle class society where they get education from other countries, such as in Rome and Paris which are known as a modern and secular European centre. Influenced by rational point of view, most of them can be categorized as “serious” or agnostic person who place the irrational things in the second place. Besides, the unity of plot and theme also implies that secularization and its causes could occur anywhere as long as there are social changing and the rise of some social scientific issue. Then, the causes of secularization in England middle class society are the industrialization and the reform movement which is influenced by the implementation of some social scientific issue, including the rise of West philosophy such as rationalism, positivism, humanism and romanticism.
