Abstrak : ABSTRAK The aims of the study are to know: (1) whether there is a positive correlation between reading habit and reading comprehension; (2) whether there is a positive correlation between ability in understanding sentence patterns and reading comprehension; and (3) whether there is a positive correlation between reading habit and ability in understanding sentence patterns simultaneously and reading comprehension of the second grade students of SMA N 1 Grabag Magelang in academic year 2006/2007. In accordance with the aims above, the writer uses a correlational study. The population of this study is all the second grade students of SMA N 1 Grabag Magelang in academic year 2006/2007 consisting of 240 students. The sample of this study is class XI IA-1, which consists of 40 students. The sampling technique used is cluster random sampling. In collecting the data, the writer uses questionnaire for reading habit and tests for ability in understanding sentence patterns and reading comprehension. The form of the questionnaire is close-type questionnaire. Meanwhile, the forms of the test are multiple choice tests for ability in understanding sentence patterns and reading comprehension. The techniques of analyzing data are simple and multiple regression and correlational. The result of analysis shows that there is a positive correlation between reading habit and reading comprehension. It shows that rx1y, 0.742, is significant, since to, 6.827, is greater than tt for df =38 at the level of significance a = 0.05, that is 1.686; the t obtained is greater than t table. So, it can be concluded that (1) there is a positive correlation between reading habit and reading comprehension; (2) there is a positive correlation between ability in understanding sentence patterns and reading comprehension. It is shown by the result of rx2y, 0.752, which is significant, because to, 6.727, is greater than tt for df =38 at the level of significance a = 0.05, that is 1.686. (3) There is a positive correlation between reading habit and ability in understanding sentence patterns simultaneously and reading comprehension. The correlation coefficient of those three variables using F test (F obtained) is 4970, while F table for df 2 to 37 at the level of significance a = 0.05 is 3.252. So, F obtained is greater than F table. The coefficient of the determination between X1 and Y is 0.5506. It means that 55.06% variation of reading comprehension (Y) is influenced by reading habit (X1) and the other is influenced by other factor. While the coefficient of the determination between X2 and Y is 0.5655. It means that 56.55% variation of reading comprehension (Y) is influenced by ability in understanding sentence patterns (X2) and the other is influenced by other factors. The coefficient of the determination between X1 and X2 simultaneously and Y is 0.707. It means that 70.7% variation of reading comprehension (Y) is influenced by reading habit (X1) and ability in understanding sentence patterns (X2) and the other is influenced by other factor.
