Abstrak : Biomass briquette is the material of solid fuels made from biomass with or without using binder as the adhesive. The biomass used in this research is the sawdust of Kalimantan wood, which is Meranti. Briquetting pressure, binder material, and amount of binder are important parameters in briquetting. Despite of adhesive, binder also plays rule to increase the briquette strength. This research aims to find out the effect of briquetting pressure, binder material, and binder percentage on the characteristic of physical and mechanical properties of biomass briquette. The physical properties which are analyzed are the density a moment after get out from mold (initial density) and the density after a week of relaxation (relaxed density). Mean while the mechanical property which is analyzed is axial compressive strength. The variation of briquetting pressures used in briquetting process are 200 kg/cm², 400 kg/cm², 600 kg/cm², 800 kg/cm², and 1000 kg/cm². Binder materials used are a molasses, starch, bentonit and lime. Whereas the varieties of binder percentage are 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% (% of briquette weight). The briquetting process consists of, several phases : drying biomass, meshing, adhesive manufacturing, blending, and briquetting. This density analysis according to ASAE S269.4 DEC 96 standart uses direct measurement method by using digital caliper and digital scales. Whereas axial compressive strength of briquette is tested by using Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Briquetting on the pressure of 200 kg/cm² uses manual hydraulic jack screw and on the pressure above 200 kg/cm² uses pressing machine. Biomass briquetting is conducted by using 10 seconds holding time. The result of experiment shows that higher briquetting pressure, is the bigger the briquette density (initial density and relaxed density) and axial compressive strength are of. In the veriety of binder percentage, it is identified that the biggest initial density is on the level 5 % except on the 20 % of molasses. Whereas the highest relaxed density is on binder percentage 5 % and the biggest relaxed density on bentonit is 980,097 kg/cm³. The optimum parameter briquetting biomass on the pressure 1000 kg/cm² with binder molasses on the 10 % binder percentage. Keywords : briquetting, binder, density, compressive strength, biomass
