Request strategies applied by the characters of a movie entitled guess who (a socio-pragmatics approach)

× ABSTRACS This research was conducted to identify the strategy of requesting applied by the characters of the movie Guess Who, the way the characters use the strategy, and the factors that influence the use of the strategy. The research was conducted in a Socio-Pragmatic Approach with speech act as the field of study. It was a descriptive qualitative research, which employed purposive sampling as the sampling technique. The researcher focused only on the dialogue that contained request expressions. If there were a lot of dialogues that have the same criteria, i.e. they belong to the same strategy with the same factors and similar ways of performing, the researcher would only present some of them as the representation. From the result of the analysis, there were seven strategies used by the characters of Guess Who when they make requests. They are: Hint, Questioning the Hearer’s Ability/ Wilingness, Suggestory Formulae, Statements of the Speaker’s Needs and Demands, Statements of Obligations and Necessities, Performative, and Imperative. It is found that the movie characters perform the strategy in various ways. They are related to the characters’ key, politeness, and request modifications that they use when making requests. The researcher also finds that there are some factors that influence the application of the strategies. They are: the relationships of the participants and the purpose of the requests; the relationships of the participants and the situation when the requests occur; the purpose of the requests; the situation when the requests occur; the relationships of the participants, the situation when the request occurs, and the purpose of the requests.
