|Abstrak||:||ABSTRAK This research is carried out to find out the types of requestives employed by speakers and to describe the speakers’ ways in expressing the requestives. Based on the objectives of the study, this study uses a descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data the researcher takes a novel entitled The Glass House by Lynn Bushell as the source. The population is all the requestives spoken by the characters in the novel. The researcher uses total sampling technique. There are 63 data which belong to the requestives Based on the results of the research, the writer found five types of requestives employed by the characters, namely requests for action, invitations, offers, requests for permission, and proposals. The speakers deliver their requestives in four different ways: using imperative sentences, declarative sentences, interrogative sentences (presented in declarative questions, a wh-question, tag-questions, yes-no questions, and alternative questions), and mixed sentence forms. In using the declarative sentence, the speaker delivers his/her requestive in a polite way. The interrogative sentence is used as a polite way in delivering the requestive. Moreover, in the interrogative, the speaker is not sure whether the addressee will comply with the requestive. Hence, the speaker gives an option to the addressee. The imperative form of requestive indicates that the speaker is putting pressure on the addressee to comply with the requestive. The mixed form of sentence is delivered by the speaker to make an intention to his requestive. Related to teaching English, the implication is that both the English teachers and the students of English Education should know more about speech acts’ theories and types of sentences since they are important in teaching English and can improve the students’ communicative skill. Moreover, this research may give additional information to teachers and students and be a useful reference to others.|
