× ABSTRAK This thesis entitled Marchbanks’s Neurotic need of love and its influence to his pursuit of happiness was conducted upon George Bernard Show’s Candida. The first problem of this thesis was to know the factors causing Marchbanks’s neurotic need of love, the main character of Candida. The second problem was to know the influence of Marchbanks’ neurotic need of love on his pursuing of happiness. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to find out the factors that caused Marchbanks’s neurotic need of love and the influence of Marchbanks’s neurotic need of love to his pursuit of happiness. To achieve the objectives, this research used descriptive qualitative research in which the method is a literary discussion. Besides structural approach for literary analyzing, this research employed psychological approach especially Karen Horney’s theory of Interpersonal Psychoanalytic especially the theory of neurotic need. These approaches are applied in order to know the cause of Marchbanks’s neurotic need and how it influences his view about happiness. Based on the analysis and interpretation of the data, Marchbanks’ neurotic need of love is caused by his bad relationship with his parents in his childhood. He is from a noble family. He is a pathetic figure since his parents treat him without love and benign care. Marchbanks does not get his parents’ love. He is treated differently by his parents among his brothers and sisters. Moreover, he got abused from his father. The only person who loves him is his old nurse but she died soon that make him so miserably. Since, parents’ love and benign care are very important for his development to be a normal people, his loss of love leads him to undergo basic anxiety. His basic anxiety influences his view that love is his happiness that should be pursued. Therefore, he searches another love that he thought can replace his lost love. Since his soul becomes hunger of love, he searches love whatever the way he takes. He becomes a neurotic person since he is motivated by his basic anxiety and thought that the only happiness is love. He misunderstood the meaning of love since he thought it will send him off to get happiness. When he feels that he is treated kindly by Candida, the wife of Mavor Morell, the man who has found Marchbanks stayed at the Thames Embankment, Marchbanks convinces that he was loved by her. He misunderstands to Candida’s treatment. He wants Candida to be his lover. Marchbanks tries to seize Candida from his husband. He takes many bad ways to get Candida from her husband since he thinks Candida can give him love and happiness that he has longing for along time. Marchbanks loss of love in his childhood makes him misunderstand the meaning of love. He views love and happiness only by owning Candida. His hunger for love lead him to do some brutality in his way to pursue happiness. In the end, he should get out from Morell’s house. He does not get love from Candida. He fails to pursuit his happiness.
