Abstrak : ABSTRAK The aim of the research is to know what happens during the implementation of inquiry based teaching and how far the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery. The research focuses on solving the problems of Fifth grade students of SDIT Az Zahra Sragen. The problem is the students’ low vocabulary mastery. The research was conducted from October to November 2008. The subject of the study is the students of class VB of SDIT Az Zahra Sragen. The researcher conducts the study in two cycles. Each cycle consists of a series of steps. They are identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, reflecting the action, and revising the plan. Data are collected through observation and interview. The observation is reflected in field notes and photographs. The data are analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative data are analyzed by using Constant Comparative Method that consists of four stages, namely comparing incidents applicable to each category, integrating categories and their properties, delimiting the theory, and writing the theory. From the qualitative data, the researcher reveals that the implementation of inquiry based teaching improves the students’ vocabulary mastery and motivation. The improvement is also supported by the improvement of the students’ participation in vocabulary teaching and learning process. Quantitative data, which are collected by conducting pre test and post test, are analyzed to know the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery. The mean score of pre test is 5.91. This score improves to 7.64 in post test 1 and even higher, the mean score gained in post test 2 that is 8.43. Based on the results of the study, the researcher concludes that the implementation of inquiry based teaching improves the students’ vocabulary mastery.
