× ABSTRACT This thesis takes the translation of the metaphorical expression in the novel entitled Sang Alkemis written by Paulo Coelho as the topic. This thesis is conducted in order to describe the strategies applied by the translator to translate the metaphors and to know the quality of the translation in terms of the accuracy and the acceptability. The research is descriptive qualitative. The sampling technique of this study is purposive sampling. The source data is a novel entitled Sang Alkemis written by Paulo Coelho. The data consist of the English metaphors and its Indonesian version translated by Tanti Lesmana. The selected data become the primary data, while the secondary data were taken from the questionnaire collected from three raters. Key informant was also involved to validate the metaphors. There are 162 data found in the novel. The result of this analysis shows that there are five strategies employed in translating the metaphorical expressions: keeping the metaphor of the source language (103 data; 63, 6 %), replacing the metaphor into the standard metaphor of the target language (15 data; 9, 3 %), translating the metaphor into simile (10 data; 6, 2 %), deleting the metaphor (4 data; 1, 8 %) and converting of the original metaphor into its sense (30 data; 18, 5 %). At most, the metaphorical expressions in the novel entitled The Alchemist are translated by keeping the original metaphor. It is because this novel is a reflective novel and the type of the novel influenced the strategy used in translating the metaphor. Every metaphor found in the novel, contains the hidden message or the implicit meaning. The writer intends to invite the readers to think and to reflect the message. Therefore, this strategy is the most appropriate to translate the metaphors in order to retain the original form and meaning. Besides, most of the metaphors in the novel are universal metaphors so this strategy is the best choice in translating the metaphors. The context of the situation also influences the translator to use this strategy. Meanwhile, the deletion strategy had the fewest numbers of data. The partial deletion is used by the translator. The reason why this strategy has the fewest number of data is almost the same with the reason of the use of the first strategy. The novel is a reflective novel, so if the deletion can be avoided, it is better not to use it because it will disturb the aesthetic value, the figurative sense and also the meaning of the metaphor. This strategy is usually used for the redundant metaphor. Dealing with the quality of the translation, the translation of the metaphorical expression in the Sang Alkemis was accurate and acceptable since the mean score of the accuracy was 1,2 and the mean score of the acceptability is 1, 1. For the accuracy of the translation, 142 data (87, 7 %) are considered accurate by the raters, 18 data (11, 1 %) are less accurate and 2 data (1, 2 %) are inaccurate. Meanwhile, the raters assessed that 158 data (97, 5 %) are acceptable and the rest (4 data; 2, 5 %) are less acceptable.
