× ASBTRACT 2008. This research explores Edward Ferrars’ and John Willoughby’s reasons to get married in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. Both of them have different points of view about marriage. Edward struggles for his love and wants to sacrifice everything for his love. John Willoughby thinks that money is more important than love. He also argues that money can buy happiness. The objective of this research is to study the reasons of Edward Ferrars and John Willoughby to get married. This research applies descriptive-qualitative method. The source of data is Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. The researcher applies Kelley’s attribution theory which explains that someone’s behavior is initiated by internal and external factors. If someone cannot predict other's behavior, the world will be seen randomly, surprisingly and incoherently. By predicting somebody else's behavior a punishment or an appreciation can be anticipated. The researcher concludes that Edward Ferrars’ reason to get married is his love to Elinor. He also keeps his principles as a gentleman who never breaks his promise. John Willoughby’s reasons to get marriage is his intention to stay in glamorous life with much money.
