Adolescent Identity Construction Through Politeness Strategies in The Main Character of the Movie Eighth Grade: A Socio-Pragmatics Approach

This study examines the relationship between politeness strategies and adolescent identity statuses in the movie Eighth Grade (2018). It aims to identify the politeness strategies employed by the main character across different adolescent identity statuses and to examine how the narrative stage influences their use. Using a descriptive qualitative method and a socio-pragmatic approach, this study analyzes the main character’s utterances throughout the movie. The findings reveal that positive politeness is the most dominant strategy, while identity moratorium is the most prominent identity status portrayed by the main character. The study also suggests that different narrative stages influence the use of politeness strategies throughout the process of adolescent identity statuses.
