A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF GRAMMAR PRACTICE IN THE TEXTBOOK“BAHASA INGGRIS TINGKAT LANJUT” GRADE XI BASED ON UR’SFRAMEWORK

This study examines grammar practice activities in the textbook Bahasa Inggris Tingkat Lanjut SMA Grade XI (2023 edition). It aims to investigate (1) how grammar practice activities are presented based on Ur’s (2024) grammar practice framework and (2) how these activities are distributed across the five units. A qualitative deductive content analysis was conducted using a coding sheet based on Ur’s eight grammar practice types. The findings revealed: (1) 24 grammar practice activities were identified, representing only four of the eight practice types: Awareness (45.83%), Controlled Responses (33.33%), Guided Meaningful Practice (16.67%), and Controlled Drills (4.17%), while Meaningful Drills, Free Sentence Composition, Discourse Composition, and Free Discourse were not found in grammar section. (2) The activities were also distributed unevenly across the units, showing a limited progression from highly controlled to guided practice without reaching communicative or discourse-level grammar use. Overall, the textbook provides limited opportunities for students to use grammar in authentic communication. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to supplement the textbook with communicative grammar activities, and textbook developers should incorporate the missing practice types in future editions to better support the communicative goals of the national curriculum.
