Supervisor: Dewi Cahyaningrum, S.Pd., M.Pd “SEMANTIC ROLES IN RECOUNT TEXTS: A CONTENT ANALYSIS ON TENTH GRADE ENGLISH TEXTBOOKS” Thesis, Surakarta: Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University, July 2026.Semantic roles are essential linguistic resources for meaning construction in texts. According to Yule (2023), semantic roles represent the functions performed by noun phrases in events expressed through verbs, including agent, theme, experiencer, instrument, goal, source, and location. Despite their importance, the realization of semantic roles in EFL recount texts remains underexplored. Therefore, this study aims to: (1) identify the semantic roles found in recount texts within grade X English textbooks based on Yule’s (2023) classification; and (2) examine their distribution and functional representation across the texts. This study employed qualitative content analysis (Krippendorff, 2018). Data were collected through document analysis (Bowen, 2009) from four recount texts in two Grade X English textbooks and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles et al. (2020). The findings revealed that all seven semantic roles were identified, with Theme being the most frequent (42%) and Instrument the least frequent (2.5%). The roles also showed distinct patterns across the orientation, events, and re-orientation stages and between personal and historical recounts. In conclusion, semantic role realization is shaped by both the rhetorical structure and the type of recount text, highlighting its value for understanding meaning construction and supporting English language teaching and learning.
