Vocabulary mastery plays a fundamental role in English language learning;
however, many English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students continue to experience
difficulties in acquiring, organizing, and retaining new vocabulary effectively. Personal
Vocabulary Notes (PVN) have been proposed as a learner-centered vocabulary
learning strategy, yet studies exploring students' perceptions and implementation of
PVN in online learning environments remain limited. Therefore, this study aimed to
explore the implementation of Personal Vocabulary Notes and examine senior high
school students' perceptions of using PVN as a vocabulary learning strategy. This study
employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving nine senior high school students
from different schools. Data were collected through document analysis of students'
Personal Vocabulary Notes shared via Discord and semi-structured interviews. The
collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that
students implemented PVN by collecting unfamiliar vocabulary from authentic
sources, organizing lexical information with meanings, contextual examples, and
personal notes, and reviewing their vocabulary regularly. The implementation also
generated positive cognitive, affective, and conative responses, indicating that PVN
promoted meaningful vocabulary learning, learner autonomy, and sustained
motivation. These findings suggest that PVN is a practical learner-centered strategy
that can support vocabulary development and enrich vocabulary instruction in EFL
contexts.
