Producing English Subtitles for Video Mbahas Sejarah and Translating a Historical Book Sekilas Sejarah Karaton Surakarta in English at Rumah Budaya Kratonan

This final report was written based on my internship program at Rumah Budaya Kratonan, located in Surakarta, from January 27th to March 31st, 2026. The purpose of these activities is to improve translation skills and gain practical experience in a professional work environment. This report explained the activities I did during the internship, including producing English subtitles for three video contents of Mbahas Sejarah and translating a historical book entitled Sekilas Sejarah Karaton Surakarta. When producing subtitles, I faced challenges in translating cultural and military terms. Meanwhile, when translating a historical book, the main difficulties involved Javanese terms, titles, a song, and political terms. To solve these challenges, I used the translation process by Nida & Taber (1982). The translation process was completed in three stages: analysis, transfer, and restructuring. In the analysis stage, I studied and understood the source text before translating it into the target language. In the transfer stage, I started translating the meaning of the source text into English by using translation techniques by Molina & Albir (2002) and Mona & Baker (2018), such as pure borrowing, established equivalent, and using a loan word with explanation. I also did some searching and used references to support the accuracy of the translation. In the restructuring stage, I revised the translation by changing some words, grammar, and the use of punctuation. Additionally, I participated in several other activities, such as content writing, editing, and graphic design. Through these projects, I can improve my translation skills and gained experience in the media industry.
