Translation Analysis of Directive Speech Act in Fang Runin’s Utterances in the Dragon Republic Novel

This research focuses on the translation analysis of directive speech act uttered by Fang Runin in the Dragon Republic novel. This research aims to identify and examine the directive speech act subcategory, translation technique, shifting in directive speech act subcategory, and translation quality assessment in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained from two primary sources: documents in the form of two novels entitled The Dragon Republic and Republik Naga, and informants in the form of raters. This research employed a purposive sampling technique in selecting the data and informants. In collecting the data, this research employed content analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The findings revealed a total of 152 instances of directive speech acts uttered by Fang Runin. Those were classified into six subcategories: question, requirement, requestive, prohibitive, advisory, and permissive, with question emerged as the most dominant subcategory. This research also discovered 13 translation techniques dominated by established equivalent and 3 instances of shifting in the directive speech act subcategory caused by the discursive creation technique. Lastly, the cumulative translation score is 2.92.
