THE REPRESENTATION OF FEMALE SEX WORKER IN ANORA (2024): A FEMINIST STANDPOINT ANALYSIS

This study explores the representation of a female sex worker through Ani as the main character of Anora (2024) from a feminist standpoint. Using a semiotic approach, this study analyzes visual and narrative elements to reveal how Ani is marginalized by the dominant groups. With movies being a medium to introduce professions to the audience, the representation in media matters. This study reveals how Anora (2024) takes a different approach in representing a female sex worker in movies. With feminist standpoint theory, this research found important aspects that highlights sex work as a form of labor. The marginalization of a sex worker, either based on gender or class, influences Ani’s situated knowledge. Her economic-oriented view becomes one of the most crucial parts in navigating her work and daily life. Moreover, it also influences the way she builds self-protection against the dominant groups. This study also highlights the strong objectivity in representing female sex worker that is shown through its portrayal of sex work as labor and the solidarity of the marginalized groups.
