VISUAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM DESIGN USING SIGNS AND COMMUNICATION CARDS THROUGH AN INCLUSIVE APPROACH AT KAWAN TULI COFFEE SHOP. Final Project. Visual Communication Design Study Program,Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta. 2026. Kawan Tuli is a coffee shop in Surakarta that employs deaf baristas. In itsdaily operations, communication barriers between deaf staff and customers whoare unfamiliar with sign language have become a significant challenge thatdisrupts service quality. The existing communication solutions have not beensystematically or inclusively designed, and therefore fail to effectively address theneeds of both parties. This design project aims to develop a visual communicationsystem consisting of a sign system and communication cards that can facilitateinteractions between customers and deaf staff at Kawan Tuli. The methodemployed is Human-Centered Design (HCD) as proposed by Norman (2013),encompassing three stages: user needs observation, design ideation, andprototyping. Data collection was conducted through direct observation, interviews with Kawan Tuli staff and management, and comparative analysis ofsimilar visual communication systems. The design outputs consist of six types ofsigns (directional, ordering, pick-up, area, information, and menu board) andfour categories of communication cards (gesture, ordering, status, andexpression). The system was designed with inclusive principles to ensure it iseasily understood by all users regardless of their background in sign language. This project is expected to serve as a reference for coffee shops or other businessesemploying deaf workers in building an inclusive and functional visualcommunication system.
