THE REPRESENTATION OF THE MAIN CHARACTER’S EMOTIONAL CONFLICT THROUGH IMPOLITENESS STRATEGIES AND EGO DEFENCE MECHANISMS IN THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN (2016): A PSYCHO PRAGMATIC STUDY

This study examines impoliteness strategies, ego defence mechanisms, and therepresentation of emotional conflict in The Edge of Seventeen (2016) through apsycho-pragmatic approach. It aims to identify the impoliteness strategies used bythe main character, examine the ego defence mechanisms reflected in her utterance,and analyze how emotional conflict is represented across the narrative stages. Usinga descriptive qualitative method, this study analyses the main character’s utterancesthroughout the film. The findings reveal that positive impoliteness is the mostdominant impoliteness strategy, while displacement is the most frequently used egodefence mechanism. The study also shows that emotional conflict is representeddifferently across the narrative stages through the interaction between impolitenessstrategies and ego defence mechanisms. Overall, these findings provide a broaderunderstanding of how language reflects psychological experiences in filmdiscourse.
