Diana Mazida. (2023). “THE CLASSIFICATION OF READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS TYPES BASED ON BARRETT’S TAXONOMY OF AN ENGLISH TEXTBOOK FOR GRADE X “PATHWAY TO ENGLISH PHASE E””. This research aimed to investigate the classification of reading comprehension question types based to Barrett’s Taxonomy and the distribution of the HOTS and LOTS questions presented in the English textbook.

This research is a qualitative study in the form of content analysis. The data are the reading comprehension questions derived from the English textbook for grade ten entitled “Pathway to English Phase E” published by Erlangga. Furthermore, the data were collected and examined through document analysis by using the interactive model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014).

The results of this study show that the textbook covered all of the reading comprehension questions types based on Barrett’s Taxonomy which consisted of Literal Comprehension (20.1%), Reorganization (16.2%), Inferential Comprehension (28.2%), Evaluation (18.4%), and Appreciation (17.1%). Accordingly, the textbook is dominated with HOTS questions (Inferential Comprehension, Evaluation, and Appreciation level) by 63.6%, and LOTS questions (Literal Comprehension and Reorganization level) were less dominant by 36.3%. However, even though the HOTS questions indicate a high percentage, the distributions of the HOTS questions were imbalanced in several chapters.

The researcher suggests the teachers to add more HOTS questions in the chapters with a small number of HOTS questions. This study is expected to offer insight for future researchers in conducting similar topics.
