The Roles of Affect in Building the Characters in the Storyline of The School for Good and Evil (2022) Movie: An Appraisal Study

This research aimed to identify the roles of affect in building the characters in the storyline of The School for Good and Evil (2022) movie. It is aimed to identify the types of affect, to find how the characters use affect and to analyze how the scriptwriter uses and applies the affect system to build the story from orientation, complication, evaluation and resolution.

This research uses descriptive qualitative design with a single-embedded case study. The source of the data is the utterances produced by the protagonist and antagonist characters. The data were collected in relation to the genre analysis, characterization analysis and appraisal theory, especially attitude in affect. The data were examined using four steps of analysis: domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis and cultural theme analysis.

The result of this research show that: (1) affect takes roles in the characterization of the protagonist and antagonist characters and (2) affect takes roles in building the narrative text in each stage of the movie as it differed in orientation, complication, evaluation and resolution.
