Translating Automotive and Marketing Documents at PT STAR Software Indonesia

The internship program was conducted to gain an understanding of the translation industry and to implement translation skills that I had learned during my study at the English Diploma Program. This internship report was written based on the Students’ Internship Activity program at PT STAR Software Indonesia for a two-month period from 24 January 2023 to 24 March 2023. The purpose of writing this report is to provide an explanation of my internship activities, namely translating documents, layouting, editing, and final check. This report also covers challenges I encountered when working on the company’s projects, namely difficulties in understanding technical terms, challenges in finding suitable equivalents for automotive terms, challenges in producing interesting translations of marketing texts, and technical problems. To overcome them, I applied several strategies, namely consulting with supervisor and project managers, conducting research on the internet, applying translation theory I had learned during my academic studies, and asking help from IT support. Through this internship, I have gained practical experience directly in the industry, which helps me honing my translation skills, especially when translating automotive and marketing documents. Marketing documents are persuasive texts that usually use a strong call to action to highlight product/service benefits to attract customers. Meanwhile, automotive documents are specialized texts that use technical terms, precise descriptions, and clear language to convey vehicle information, including specifications, safety guidelines, and maintenance instructions. Besides improving my translation skill, this internship program also has equipped me with the necessary knowledge, skills, and confidence to start a career in translation industry.
