The objectives of this study were: (1) To explore which experiences during a student exchange program increase intercultural competence; (2) To explain the development of the student's perception of intercultural competence among culturally different peers while participating student exchange program. The subject of the study was an Indonesian undergraduate English education student who joined an exchange program, named Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA), for a semester at University Sains Malaysia (USM), Malaysia. This study applied the autobiographical narrative inquiry method and gathered data from the data transcription and artifacts. The study examined the participant’s experiences and the impact on intercultural competence. The participant recorded a reflexive video about her experiences during the student exchange program, which was already uploaded to her YouTube account. In this study, there were two main findings. First, the finding about the participant’s activities during the student exchange program increased intercultural competence. The activities which improved intercultural competence included academic activities, non-academic activities, and outside-campus activities. Second, the finding about the student’s perception of intercultural competence among culturally different peers. There was an enhancement of the participant's perception of intercultural competence among her international friends before and after participating in a student exchange program. Thus, all the stakeholders, for instance, the government, university, lecturers, and students, must actively continue the international mobility program to obtain international exposure and develop intercultural competence.
