The Use of Canva Application in Teaching Writing to Junior High School Students: A Qualitative Descriptive

The objectives of this study were: (1) to identify how the Canva application method is implemented in teaching writing procedure text. (2) to describe teachers' difficulties in implementing the Canva application in teaching writing procedure text. The study was conducted at one of the junior high schools in Surakarta. The subject of the study was an English teacher who participated in teaching and learning activities using the Canva application. This study applied a qualitative descriptive method and gathered the data from the teacher through observation, interview and some artifacts. The observation and interview data was transcribed, coded, interpreted. Meanwhile, the artifacts were analyzed by the researcher. The study explored the use of the Canva application in teaching writing procedure text to junior high school students. The teacher would implement the Canva application supported by Instagram application to the students. Then the students were asked to make a procedure text using Canva. Then, they were asked to upload the result on Instagram. The students’ task result was a written text. The findings showed that the implementation of the Canva application was going well. Although, there were still some obstacles faced by the teacher, but it showed positive outcomes. Moreover, the findings about students’ perceptions showed that 1) they were enthusiastic and enjoyed the learning process without any difficulties or fear; 2) their writing skills began to increase since the implementation of the Canva application; 3) there are still several students who couldn’t understand well the learning process easily; 4) moreover, the implementation of the Canva application in writing activity made the classroom situation became less conducive. This research would be beneficial for the English teacher and also the prospective teacher to evaluate their teaching strategy. Therefore, the teacher should guide the students during the teaching and learning process clearly and patiently. The teacher must also motivate the students and provide an excellent environment to engage the students when implementing the Canva application during the teaching and learning process.
