The study showed that the EFL learners of English Education Department in a university in Surakarta mostly used all of the Oral Communication strategies Inventory (OCSI) by Nakatani (2006). The most dominant strategies they used are: nonverbal strategies while speaking in the first position, the second is negotiation for meaning while speaking, the third is message reduction and alteration, and the fourth is negotiation for meaning while listening, while the strategy that is rarely use is attempt to think in English strategies. After the researcher found the most strategies they used in learning speaking, the researcher found some reasons why they chose those strategies. The study showed that, even though they have different reasons one to another but in the end, the goal is the same; to make it simpler for themselves to deliver messages to the interlocutor and to ensure that interlocutor understands what they mean, finally the biggest goal is to keep the relationship going well.
