Formative assessment is vital in education as it serves various purposes, including assessing students' understanding of specific material and aiding teachers in planning future learning. Recent Indonesian research highlights that many pre-service teachers lack comprehension of formative assessment and demonstrate a monotonous selection of assessment techniques. The objectives of this study are: 1) To check pre-service teacher understanding of formative assessment, 2) To find out what the formative assessment techniques used by graduated pre-service teachers, and 3) To investigate what are their reasons for using that technique for administering formative assessment in their classroom. Employing qualitative research, the case study involved three graduated pre-service teachers whose data were collected through observations, interviews, and artifact examinations. The finding highlight that pre-service teachers has lack understanding of formative assessment and techniques. For the formative assessment technique, they use oral, question, writing, and task techniques, revealing varied reasons for their use. Recommendations to increase knowledge about formative assessment and formative assessment techniques are presented at the end of the paper based on the discussion of the findings.
