Hestina Elga Utami. 2023. A TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES FOUND IN THE “ENOLA HOLMES” MOVIE. Undergraduate Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Cultural Sciences. Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta. Supervisor: Dr. Bayu Budiharjo, S.S., M. Hum. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of prepositional phrases found in the “Enola Holmes” movie, identify the translation techniques used by the translator, analyze the impacts of the applied translation techniques on the presence and absence of shift, and study the impacts of the utilized translation techniques on the quality of the translations of the prepositional phrases. The study is categorized as descriptive qualitative research due to the fact that the research is done descriptively and the result is presented in the form of descriptions. The source of data are documents and informants. The document consists of a movie entitled “Enola Holmes”. Meanwhile, the informants are raters who validated the data and assessed the shifts occur in the translation as well as the translation quality. The data were collected through content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. In addition, the data were analyzed using Spradley’s data analysis: domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis. The research shows that there are 112 prepositional phrases classified into four classifications. 78 data (69.7%) are categorized as bound-simple, 29 data (25.8%) are free-simple, three data (2.7%) are bound-complex, and two data (1.8%) are free-complex. In addition, there are 23 techniques identified in which 16 of them are combinations of techniques and seven of them are single techniques. The translation techniques used are dominated by established equivalent + established equivalent and implicitation + established equivalent. The applied techniques give impacts on the presence and absence of shift in the translations of prepositional phrases. There are 63 undergo shift and 49 do not undergo shift. Furthermore, the analysis of the impact of translation techniques on translation quality shows that the level of accuracy is high while the level of acceptability is also high. Nevertheless, the chosen translation techniques made several prepositional phrase translations to be less accurate, inaccurate, less acceptable, and unacceptable. Most of the accuracy decreases are caused by the implementation of deletion technique which delete the whole of prepositional phrase translations and reduction + established equivalent technique since it does not translate the preposition, only the object of preposition. Therefore, these two techniques do not transfer the messages perfectly. Meanwhile, the decreases in the acceptability are caused by the deletion technique because the prepositional phrases are not presented in the target.
