Language Centre of Universitas Sebelas Maret
This report was written based on the results of the Kuliah Magang Mahasiswa
(KMM) held from January 16 to March 11, 2023. This activity is intended to fulfill the
graduation requirements of the English Diploma Program. This program is designed to
give new experiences and skills to students so they will ready to face the world of work
later. In this internship program, I did some activities that divided into main, secondary,
and additional activities. My main activity was translating academic text while my
secondary activity was translating legal text. In translating the texts, I used the stages of
translation by Nida and Taber (1982), including analysis, transferring, and restructuring.
In translating academic text, I found the difficulties to understand some phrases,
sentences, and the style of the academic text. These phrases are difficult to understand
because they contain cultural elements. At the same time, phrases with no equivalent in
the target language, while sentences, are difficult to understand because they have too
many words. To understand the phrases and style of academic text, I searched on the
internet for the description of the phrases and the academic article style. Meanwhile, to
understand the sentences, I need to break down the sentences in order to make it simple,
so it is easy to understand. In this way, translations of difficult terms and sentences can
be solved. Meanwhile, for my secondary activity, I translated a legal text. To translate
this text, I also used the stages of translation by Nida and Taber to understand the legal
text. When I faced difficulties in translating phrases, I researched them on the internet
and did a consultation with my internship supervisor. After that, the final translation of
the terms also could be solved.
