The Significance of Using Authentic Materials for Teaching Reading: Systematic Review

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF USING AUTHENTIC MATERIALS FOR TEACHING READING: SYSTEMATIC REVIEW Thesis, Surakarta: Surakarta: Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta, 2023 This study aimed to analyze 1) how the researcher bases the research on the theories; 2) how the validity of each research study maintained throughout the research studies; and 3) how strong the claim on using authentic materials in teaching and learning reading activity according to each type of experimental design. This study was using systematic review to analyze the selected research articles. Three research articles were analyzed for this study. The data was gathered through systematic review procedure and coded by using PRISMA. The data analysis used content analysis and coded with Microsoft excel. The results showed that the base theories in all analyzed articles were not strong enough. Also, how the validity maintained in each study was different, such how internal validity threats controlled and how each study conducted validity and reliability test for the research instruments that affected the research results. Lastly, each claim on each study has different status because the varied factors. The implication of this study implied that conducting research about authentic materials on reading class need some steps to follow because it could affect the results. Moreover, if the teachers wanted to use these research studies about authentic materials on reading and adopted the same procedure to their class, the teachers needed to paid more attention to it. The teachers should consider many aspects on the congruence of theory, research process, and results. So that, the same methodology applied would bring the best result for both teachers and students.
