EFL Students’ Experiences in Using Narrow Reading Strategy to Overcome Difficulties in Writing a Research Article: A Narrative Inquiry

The objectives of this study are: (1) To find out the difficulties faced by students in the use of narrow reading strategy to solve writing problems, and (2) to find out students’ experiences towards the use of narrow reading strategy to solve writing problems. The subject of this research were three EFL undergraduate students from the English Education Department who were experienced in writing a research article in an article writing class. This research employed a narrative inquiry approach and gathered data through semi-structured interviews and artifacts collected from participants’ activities in article writing class. The researcher used Google Meet applications. The results of the interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Coding techniques were also conducted in order to identify the key points of the data. The result of this study identified that the narrow reading strategy helped them in overcoming difficulties during writing a research article. Difficulties in research article writing that are mentioned are difficulties related to sentence structure and vocabulary. The present study revealed that the narrow reading strategy is an effective strategy for improving students' reading and writing performance especially in sentence structure and vocabulary enhancement.
