ABSTRACT

This thesis analyzes how nine gay individuals in Yogyakarta perceive a gay representation in the movie "Bros." It explores their interactions with heteronormative ideals in the film, their imagined desires towards characters, and whether their perceptions of gay representations stem from modern gay culture or Indonesian same-sex relations. Data from interviews and focus groups were analyzed using Brett Farmer's Gay Spectatorship Theory. The findings show that participants accept and perpetuate heteronormative values, reflecting broader societal norms. Additionally, their articulation of desires unveils unique identities within the gay community, with partial adoption of western values influencing their perceptions. The research provides insights into the complexities of gay identities along with their attitudes towards gay representation in American cultural products.
