Exploring EFL Learners' Experiences on The Impact of Johnny's Communication Center Videos as An Extramural IDLE on Their Pronunciation

One of the impacts of technology development is the spread of digital

learning. Informal Digital Learning of English is considered to be effective in EFL

learners’ pronunciation practice. Several applications are suitable for pronunciation

learning, especially YouTube. The aim of this research is to know how listening to

and viewing YouTube videos in extramural IDLE activity could facilitate EFL

learners’ pronunciation. Moreover, this research purpose is to know the impact of

listening to and viewing YouTube videos towards EFL learners’ pronunciation.

This study explores informal digital learning activity with YouTube as the learning

media. The participants were three teenagers aged 16-18 who watched Johnny’s

Communication Center videos and received impacts toward their pronunciation.

This study applied a narrative inquiry approach, and the data were gathered from

semi-structured interviews and artifacts collected from the participants’ extramural

IDLE activity. The result of this study shows that listening to and viewing YouTube

videos as learning media in extramural IDLE activity could facilitate EFL learners’

pronunciation by providing learners with several features both from YouTube and

other than YouTube that helped the participants whenever they had problems

regarding the pronunciation learning process. Likewise, listening to and viewing

YouTube videos give several impacts to EFL student’s pronunciation which

covered clarity and accuracy, vowels, consonants, linking words, vocal features,

and vocal quality.
