The aims of the research are (1) to know whether there is a significant difference in the achievement of grammar between the student taught by controlled composition and the students taught by the other technique (2) to know whether or not controlled composition is more effective for teaching simple past tense.
Related to the aims of the research, the writer used experimental method. The research was conducted in March 2009. The population was all of the students at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 2 Karanganyar. From the whole population, two classes were taken as the sample. The sample are class VII F as the experimental group which consists of 40 students, and class VII G as control group which consists of 37 students. The sampling technique used was purposive cluster random sampling technique. In collecting the data, the researcher used a test in the form of objective test. In analyzing the data, she used normality, homogeneity and t-test formula.
The researcher used t-test to compare the difference of the scores between the two groups. The result of the computation shows that t observation (to) is 2.2463 while the value of t table (tt) is 1.66. In other words that to is higher than tt (t observation > t table). Therefore it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. From the computation shows that the mean of the experimental group is higher than the control group. In which the value of experimental group is 83.13 and the value of control group is 79.03. Thus, the results of the research study imply that Controlled Composition would be effective for teaching grammar especially simple past tense for the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Karanganyar in academic year 2008/2009.
