High School Students’ Perception of Using Digital Storytelling to Learn Writing Skills in EFL Classroom: A Narrative Inquiry

The aims of this study are to (1) find students’ perception towards the use of Digital Storytelling to learn writing skill in EFL Classroom and (2) identify the extent of the use Digital Storytelling can mediate students to improve writing skill. This research employed a qualitative research method, and it used narrative inquiry. The researcher used the narrative inquiry to find out more about students' perceptions of Digital Storytelling to teach writing skills in EFL Classroom. The researcher selected three students from the junior high school who will be the participants of this study. The researcher collected the data in two ways, interviews and artefacts. This research was carried out in the form of qualitative research with a narrative inquiry design. The Data collection in this research used interviews and artifacts. Data were analyzed using the thematic analysis model by Barkhuizen et al (2014). Based on  the research, two of students had a positive perception of using digital storytelling to learn writing skills in EFL classrooms. Their positive perception is based on the following things: (1) Students feel that the digital storytelling method is exciting; (2). Students feel that digital storytelling can help improve their writing skills. In this research also showed that digital storytelling can help students develop their creativity by freeing students to use various media to convey their ideas. It can be concluded that digital storytelling is a creative and innovative method. There are several reasons why digital storytelling is considered an innovative and creative method: (1) Students can use various media and technology, and (2) Students feel free to express their ideas. Apart from that, it was also seen that two of students experienced an increase in their grades in writing activities. The process of using digital storytelling can improve almost all of writing components. This research can assist teachers for understanding the students' perception when teachers utilize digital storytelling method for teaching writing skills in EFL Classroom.
