The study investigates several idiom types, particularly somatic idioms, in the digital comic I Love Yoo. The work elaborates the translation strategies for translating somatic idioms from English to Indonesian, followed by assessing the translation quality.
Research findings show up to 100 phrases considered as somatic idioms in ‘I Love Yoo’ webtoon. Somatic idioms collected are classified into 6 types: idioms with verb as keyword, idiom with noun as keyword, idiom with adjective as keyword, prepositional phrase, phrasal verb, and idiomatic pairs. Baker (2018) strategies utilized consists of paraphrase, idiom with similar meaning and form, idiom with similar meaning but different form, omission of a play of idiom, omission of entire idiom.
Somatic idiom with verb as keyword turns out to be dominantly used throughout the data. Furthermore, paraphrase (PAR) strategies primarily produce correct and acceptable translations with high readability. The findings also shows a high number of translation quality for data using idioms with similar meaning and form (SMSF) as well as idioms with similar meaning but different form (SMDF). Omission of idiomatic play (OP) and omission of entire idiom (OE) strategies gain low scores in several aspects of translation quality. The results show that the somatic idioms in the I Love Yoo webtoon are properly translated for the target reader within the range of 18-23 years old.
