Swearing words is a form of communication often encountered in everyday life. Swearing words are the forceful language people use to communicate their intense emotions. This study aims to investigate: (1) the types of swearing words found in the movie entitled Bullet Train 2022, (2) the translation techniques used by the translator in the movie entitled Bullet Train 2022, and (3) the quality of translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability in the movie entitled Bullet Train 2022.
This study used a qualitative research method whose data were presented in the forms of words, clauses, and or sentences. Its data was sourced from documents and FGD with raters as informants. The research involved three raters who were tasked to assess the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability.
The result of this study shows that out of 238 data, there are seven types of swearing words, they include; sex (26), excrement (28), name of animals (9), personal background (13), sexual activity (141), taboo or religion or oath (17), and mental illness (4). The type with sexual activity is the most frequently used in the movie with the title Bullet Train 2022. The researcher also found 6 out of 18 translation techniques used by the translator to render the subtitles of Bullet Train 2022. The techniques include deletion (128), established equivalent (75), explicitation (23), implicitation (8), discursive creation (2), and modulation (2). Meanwhile, the quality assessment of the translation of swearing words results in a score of 1.80 out of 3 for its accuracy and 2.73 out of 3 for its acceptability, which means that the translation is considered less accurate but acceptable.
The study found that translating swearing words from the subtitles of the film Bullet Train 2022 does not result in accurate matches due to the employment of deletion techniques to reduce the offensive level. The swearing words found in the movie subtitles are frequently used as filler as intensifier or to convey cultural or contextual nuances that can be difficult to translate. Furthermore, another reason why the dominant use of the deletion techniques happens is due to the censorship of cultural features in the target language, which may reduce accuracy level while maintaining the acceptability level.
