TYPES, FUNCTIONS, AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE EXPRESSIVE SPEECH ACTS BY PROTAGONIST AND ANTAGONIST IN THE ADAM PROJECT MOVIE

This study is conducted to analyze Types, Functions, and The Distribution of The Expressive Speech Acts by Protagonist and Antagonist in The Adam Project Movie by applying the theories by Searle (1976) and Yule (1996). The detailed objectives of this study are: (1) to find out the types and functions of expressive speech acts in the movie, (2) to explore the differences in term of use between expressive speech acts employed by protagonist and antagonist in the movie, (3) to describe the distribution of expressive speech acts expressed by protagonist and antagonist in the movie. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The location of this study is a science-fiction adventure movie entitled The Adam Project released in 2022. The data of this study were taken from a movie script which contains the dialogue between protagonist and antagonist characters. According to the research findings, 77 data were found in this movie. The protagonist produces 66 data of expressive speech acts, while the antagonist only produces 11 data of expressive speech acts. By analysing orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution stage in this movie, the expressive types of mocking occurs more often with highest numbers of the data in complication stage along with the increasing problems.
