Contestation of Public Space in Taman Sriwedari Heritage Area.

The objectives of this study were: 1) To analyze the groups involved in the contestation over the public space of Sriwedari Park; 2) To analyze the steps taken by the aktors involved in the contestation to fight for and win their interests; 3) To analyze the actions of the Surakarta City Government in regulating the public space of Sriwedari Park to accommodate the interests of many parties; and 4) To analyze the causes of the contestation of the public space of Sriwedari Park.

The form of this research is a qualitative descriptive research. This research strategy uses case studies. The research location is the Sriwedari Park Cultural Heritage Area, Surakarta. The data sources were informants who were taken by purposive sampling, namely residents of Surakarta City which included: Academics, Solo cultural figures, community representatives around Sriwedari Park, Radya Pustaka museum managers, and representatives of Sriwedari artists. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and document studies. Data validation using triangulation. Data were analyzed using the theory of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2018), namely data condensation, data display, and dariawing conclusions or verification.

The findings shows that the groups involved in the contestation over the public space of Sriwedari Park included the heirs of KRMT Wirdjodiningrat and the Surakarta City Government. Action steps taken by the actors involved in the contestation to fight for and win their interests include: the heirs filed a lawsuit for ownership of Sriwedari to the Supreme Court, the Surakarta City Government tried to restore the function of Sriwedari Park as a public space, preservation of Sriwedari Park as a Cultural Heritage through Process of Digitalization, Legal Protection and Copyright of Sriwedari Park as a Public Space. The reason for the contestation of the Sriwedari Park public space is based on history, the dispute between the palace, the heirs of KRMT Wiryodiningrat, and the government.
