This research was conducted to describe the topics of gossip employed by characters in the film entitled BRING IT ON MANIA, the responses of gossip, and the functions of gossip applied by addresser in the film.
This research used a conversational analysis with speech act as the scope of the analysis. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. It employed purposive sampling technique. All the dialogs containing the speech act of gossip, verbal and non verbal gossip responses were taken as data.
The results of the analysis can be seen as follows:
First, some topics are found in the analysis of data. Topic on women are talked most by the participants of the gossip conversation in the film BRING IT ON MANIA. It can be focus on behavior, personal trait, and physical appearance. The topic on boasting and men are following. Topic on family is only found related to the financial of a family.
Second, only one datum shows neutral response. Other data show that participants are encouraging to be a part of conversation by continuing the gossip. Two types of responses are noted. They are mildly encouraging response and moderately encouraging response.
Third, the data show that gossips do not merely function negatively, but positively as well. The result shows that the participants gossip in order to help to establish, develop and maintain relationship. Moreover, they also function to win friend and influence people. Besides, the data show other functions of gossip. Some participants gossip to clarify social position and status, to asses and manage reputation, and resolve conflict.
Based on the conclusions above, the researcher expects that this research is beneficial and can give an input to the students in studying gossip. The researcher suggests other students of English Department who are interested in socio-pragmatics study to conduct a further research on gossips and their responses. They may attempt to analyze it in other sources such as drama and novel.
