This study examines the cultural representation in the textbook entitled “Bright an English Course for SMP/MTs Grade VII” used in Indonesia for English foreign language (EFL) students. This study implemented a qualitative content analysis by applying Spradley’s theory (1980) and Media of Culture Representation based on Adaskou, Britten, and Fahzi (1990) to investigate the cultural aspects through visual and textual data from the textbook. The data were collected and examined through document analysis. The result of this study shows that the representation of cultural aspects on the textbook covered all of the cultural aspects based on Spradley’s theory which consisted of Cultural Knowledge (42%) presented more dominantly on the English textbook compared to Cultural Artifacts (38%) and Cultural Behavior (20%). From the research finding, the research result suggests that textbook writers and designers should give more attention to emphasize the balance of cultural aspects in the textbook. Teachers may add supplementary materials or activities to patch up the shortcomings of the textbook so that students can easily grasp the values of various cultures. This study is expected to offer insight for future researchers in conducting similar topics.
