An Analysis of Self-Confidence Towards Speaking Skills: A Case Study of Third Semester Students of English Education Department

The objectives of this research are: (1) to find the students' level of self-confidence. (2) to investigate the strategies of students to improve their self-confidence. (3) to find how the self-confidence impacts the speaking skills of the third-semester students of English Education Department. This research was conducted at a university in Surakarta. The subjects of this research were six students who had been selected using purposive sampling. This research used qualitative research method of a case study on third-semester students of English Education Department and collected data through questionnaire, interview, and observation. The findings from this research showed that 1) students' level of self-confidence consists of three categories, namely, high level of self-confidence, moderate level of self-confidence, low level of self-confidence; 2) the students' strategies to improve their selfconfidence are to lower the anxiety, prepare and plan, feel in control, be involved in the conversation, evaluate your performance, monitor your performance, and plan for future tasks. (3) the impact of self-confidence in speaking skills: they are able to adapt and communicate in various situations, talk a lot in class, then can actively participate, and have high motivation. Through this, students are expected to try to use strategies to increase confidence in speaking. It is hoped that lecturers are expected to know and understand the level of students' self-confidence in speaking class
