Harmonizing Sound and Image: Onomatopoeia Translation Analysis in The Indonesia Edition of "The Adventure Of Tinton By Herge” Comic

This research is designed to classify the types of onomatopoeia words found in “The Adventure of Tintin by Herge” comic-series, identify the translation techniques used by the translator in translating the onomatopoeia, and analyze the visual depictions between the onomatopoeic expressions and the visual representation found in the comic-book. This research is categorized as descriptive qualitative research since the data of the research were analyzed descriptively and the results are in the form of words. The research used two kinds of data; linguistic data and translation data The linguistic data are the Onomatopoeia words gathered from The Adventures of Tintin comics. The translation data are the translation of the Onomatopoeia words which were translated from English into Indonesian, the translation technique of the onomatopoeia words, and the visual depictions between the onomatopoeic expressions and the visual representation found in the comics. Moreover, the source of data is only document. The documents of this research were “Tintin in America (1932), King Ottokar’s Spectre (1939), Prisoner of The Sun (1949), The Red Sea Sharks (1958), and Flight 714 (1968).” comic series. Moreover, the researcher applied content analysis in collecting the data. The result of the research is classified into 8 types using Igareda's theory, namely Sounds not made by humans at all, Biologically constrained human sounds, Sounds made by animals, Sounds made by nature, Sounds made by the interaction between a human being and an object, Filled pauses and other hesitation sounds, Non-lexical vocal gestures, and The wider class of conventionalized interjections. The data of onomatopoeia words in total is 481 data. Furthermore, there are six translation techniques applied by the translator, namely Maintaining the original as an English loan, Repetition, Changing the meaning, Translating onomatopoeia into corresponding onomatopoeia, Translating onomatopoeia into non-onomatopoeic expressions, and Translating onomatopoeic words into created onomatopoeic word. Moreover, the final data of the visual depictions between the visual representation and the onomatopoeic expressions in the comic are 444 data of excellent, 29 data of satisfactory, and 8 data of needs improvement criteria.
