In 2019, The Met Gala held its annual gala dinner and fashion event in New York City MET Museum every first Monday of May. Every year, the crew and the whole team, alongside with Anna Wintour, decide a certain theme to arrange the whole exhibition and Camp fashion became the main theme for Met Gala 2019. For that reason, this research was conducted to examine the idea of new masculinity in the 2019 Met Gala “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. Furthermore, this research aims are to find out the concept of new masculinity through the performances of the attendees, specifically Harry Styles, Billy Porter, and Jared Leto, at the 71st Met Gala Fashion Exhibition 2019 and its contribution to the American society. The research applies a qualitative-descriptive approach in collecting and analyzing the data. The primary data were taken from Pinterest and fashion magazines using observation and note-taking techniques. Later, the data were analyzed using Roland Barthes’ semiotics analysis, especially semiotics of fashion. This research applies Raewyn Connell’s hegemonic masculinity to understand the concept of hegemonic masculinity in relation to the new masculinity in fashion industry through the blurring gender lines—gender bender. This research reveals that Harry Styles, Billy Porter, and Jared Leto suggested the idea of new masculinity through fashion. Their performance at the Met Gala was not the only on stage performance that represents the idea of new masculinity. They kept representing it in their other performances after the Met Gala. It is in the way they as celebrities contribute to the idea of new masculinity in American society.
